През 1980 година, когато ваксинирането още не е било широко разпространено, случаите на инфектирани с морбили вирус в световен мащаб са около 4 000 000, а смъртните – около 2 600 000. Благодарение на поставената от ООН цел за намаляване на детската смъртност, както и ускорените програми за контрол от страна на Организацията, се постига огромно намаление на смъртните случаи заради морбили на деца под 5 годишна възраст – от 870 000 (7%) през 1990 година до 118 000 (1%) през 2008 година [1].
Смъртните случаи по други причини за близо 20 години намаляват с 28% –
от 12 000 000 през 1990 година на 8 800 000 през 2008 [2].
