Настинката е най-често срещаното вирусно заболяване на горния отдел на респираторния тракт и естествено е сред най-честите причини за посещенията при лекар [1]. Съществуват над 200 вируса, които могат да причинят обичайните симптоми на настинка, като най-честите са от групата на риновирусите, коронавирусите, аденовирусите, респираторните синцитиални вируси и други [2,3,4]. Симптомите на настинка включват възпалено гърло, хрема, кашляне, кихане, а понякога главоболие, треска и зачервени очи. Симптомите варират от човек до човек и от настинка до настинка [1]. Вирусите, причинители на настинка, се разпространяват по въздушен път при близък контакт със заразени хора. Възможно е и индиректно заразяване чрез предмети, които са били в контакт със заразени. Не съществуват ваксини за вирусите, причиняващи настинки [3]. Основен метод за предотвратяване на заболяването е миенето на ръцете, предотвратяване контакт на немити ръце с очите, устата и носа и избягване на контакт с болни хора [6]. Не съществуват и официално одобрени антивирусни лекарства, които пряко да лекуват настинката, а повечето медикаменти се използват, за да облекчават или лекуват единствено симптомите [4].
Грипът от своя сцена е остро инфекциозно заболяване, представляващо една от най-заразните вирусни инфекции. Причинява се от различни щамове на инфлуенца вируси, разпространяващи се по въздушно-капков път – при кашлица, кихане, говор. Предаването на грипните вируси, както и при тези, причиняващи настинки, се осъществява чрез допир до заразени повърхности. При него освен симптомите, характерни за настинка, са налице и мускулни болки, повишаване на температурата, втрисане и общо неразположение, умора и често пълно изтощение [7]. Протичането е значително по-продължително и тежко от това при настинките [2,3]. За разлика от настинките, при които лечението е симптоматично и липсват ваксини, за грипа лечение съществува. То включва противовирусни лекарства и специфична имунопрофилактика чрез ваксини, които се актуализират всеки сезон [5].
